Kamikaze Test Pilots

Thursday 12 March 2009 Hobgoblin Staines

Oh kudzoka kutamba !

You get the feeling that the music of the KTP did not start out as a vision, but that the sounds gradually emerged, like grubs from pupae after a long dead summer. You get the sense that the music only evolved once that stifling long sessile period had reached a natural end and once the arid ideas and dead-end formulas had been tested, retested, drained and dried. Consequently the birth of the new sound, the emergence, is a warm and finely crafted creation … and well worth the wait.

Zimbabwe born brothers ‘Beans’ and ‘Wes’ formed the band back in 2005 with Martin on bass. Jim Davies (ex Loki) was a later UK addition to the outfit with his flying V lead guitar, dreads swishing and flipping in the air, and cosmic energy pulsing through his vital sinews like a rampaging torrent. Like the name of the band, the band members are a contradiction unto themselves … the diversifying contribution from each musician creating a stylistically unique tapestry of sounds and experiences.

Most of the KTP songs start out as simple riffs played upon fibrous frets. The sounds are then built up, layer-on-layer, with generous funky chord backdrops and feverish jazzy drum accompaniments, ultimately reaching satisfying plateaus of finely produced rock and blues. The two gung-ho heroes- Beans and Wes- have a good old time smashing and thrashing. Beans provides the formidably heavy metal vocals (actually Ozzie-esque in both size and quality) and Wes pounds out those drums.

Under all that flamboyant thrashing and swirling, Jim seems tougher and more focused than the brothers, but no less intriguing. Martin is the quiet man of the band, with his black porkpie hat and dark beard, beady eyes flicking left and right. He produces a succession of thrumming bass lines and lively rumbles. Very pluckin’ good.

At the start of the gig the early sounds of KTP reminded me of Second-Coming age ‘Stone Roses’ with that heavy bluesey-rock sound predominating, interlaced with subtle jazz-funk touches. But later in the show I was reminded more of ‘System’ when the sounds developed a progressive metal edge… strange time sigs, thematic links, unorthodox sound patterns etc. Tribal rhythms and stoner rock sounds are fused with complex metal guitar-work and harmonies to become complete backdrops onto which the boys can add their richly enjoyable Africans chants.

These boys write their own songs (credits also to Gavin Creedy) and go down a storm with their (mainly) student following in Berkshire UK. The funky beats and, at times, almost jazzy licks, added to those jump blues syncopated rhythms and a ‘twin lead guitar’ approach to the breaks, mean that this band is very reminiscent of old school classic rock. Large portions of solid noise (man, this band is noisome) and spot-on harmonies add to the overall texture and quality.

I particularly appreciated a heavy and almost instrumental track ‘Kumusha’ with its insistent hooks, possibly influenced by the likes of Black Label Society and, I would even guess, Iron Maiden. It is a fine rock song with plenty of false starts, vague whaleback dwalas and promises a-plenty reminding the listener of SOAD…but with additional vocal arrangements in the Bantu language, Shona, this song a classic-rock delight.

You can pick up the Kamikaze Test Pilots new six-song EP “Into The Sun” at their gigs or off their space. Go out to see them SOON in venues around the Reading area.

Los – Hobgoblin Staines

STAINES  HOBGOBLIN
Thursday 19th February 2009

Los at staines

Self-obsession and self-absorption are not kind words for a band…but there is genius afoot here…so these guys can be
forgiven for being a tadge ‘up themselves’. Los is a trio of power-hungry power-rangers. Chris Hamilton (guitars) is the Paul
Benedict (Rev. Lindquist) of the tribe. He rallies and hounds the troops, biting heels like a sheep dog on the loose. Daniel Hale looks like a hairy 1974 version of Jeff Bridges (Thunderbolt & Lightfoot) and provides the substantial percussive element  and then we have the blonde heroine, Helen Sargent, on vocals and synthesizer. It wouldn’t be unfair to describe their sound as a kind of ‘Ting Tings’ for grown-ups with Chris playing the multi parted Jules De Martino character and Helen playing the Katie White role.

The band cites influences from the late Jeff Buckley, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana right through to Nina Simone. Note that all these artists are considered ‘serious’ as in highly academic and ‘significant’. But don’t imagine that Los mitigates any excitement just because they may possess a ‘Guardian Reader’ following and post-graduate credentials. They are more animated than words alone can describe! Think of an army of whirling dervishes together with a host of Cossacks playing rugby football together and you get close to the idea of the mayhem and energy of a Los gig.

Unusually, there is no bass guitar within the Los structure. So Helen provides (at times) some moody keyboard baselines to add some darker colours to the overall texture. But the ace of bass ain’t all that, especially when the extraordinary guitar-work of Chris is enough to satisfy any cravings you may have for deeper contextual tones.  There are imaginative chord  progressions aplenty and occasional funk or jazz elements springing up like unexpected fireworks. The total effect is more substantial than pop art or art-rock … more like the musical equivalent of heavy-duty sculpture.

The melodies are often hidden beneath swathes of disproportionate energy like a nutmeg might be hidden under several layers of a daunting crinoline Elizabethan petticoat. And the organic and frenzied drumming from Daniel is demonstrated like a kids magic show- with sleight-of-hand and colourful tricks, conjured up from nothing, for the adoring crowd.

Softly creeping up on you like a bar-lounge lizard, some of the gentle songs seem to sweetly hypnotize and mystify you and,
before you know where you are, they suck you into their cruel world like a cephalopod might devour her prey- captured and
drained- drawn in by unseen suckers. Without knowing, your are about to be digested in bite sized chunks. It is at these moments when Helen comes into her own and, at the high points, her soulful vocals can be favourably compared to the work of some mighty divas such as Doris Troy.

One of my favourite Los numbers is ‘Ba Ba Ba’. This song is about missing someone so badly that it messes with your head. We
all know the feeling. The rat-a-tat percussive elements from Daniel Hale and the stunts performed by Chris are, this time, outshone by the sheer drama of Helen’s singing. Her face a series of contortions and extortions, she gurns her way through the number and you can share her anxiety and suffering. In fact, you might even somehow feel to blame for the pain of living through it all. My, my…this lot could probably qualify for some sort of Arts Council grant with all those theatricals and histrionics going on.

My only (small) criticisms are that I would like to have seen Chris play ‘to the crowd’ rather than to his band-mates. He seemed, to me, to be too shy to face his audience and too self-conscious to be part of the act. I would also have liked to have heard a lot more keyboard work from Helen. Frankly, it seems a pity to bring your synth all that way and then let it become a shelf for your drinks.

But, all-in-all, this was a powerful piece of work by a great three-part talent. A tipping point maven trap for any person who may genuinely want to witness artistic, non formulaic, rock and jazz-laced blues.

Boogie Down to the Modern Groove- in Ascot

The quotes

Dec 24 2008      8:00P The Quotes at Bar Four     Reading

Apart from regular dates in Reading, Theale and Cookham Dean, The Quotes have recently taken up Wednesday night residency at the White Lotus Sports Bar, Henley on Thames and from October 2008 onwards, the band will be taking it to the next level with dates to be announced throughout the UK and Europe with Italian dates already in the diary.

On September 26th 2008, the self-titled debut album from The Quotes was launched in Reading to a hall packed with supporters spanning a wide age range. Their appeal to teen listeners and university-goers is an obvious one due to their songs’ energetic and modern feel, but also for the seasoned rock listeners, old enough to be their parents… the quality and tightness of their songs shines through and puts them in a class above most debut bands.

On one hand there were signs of Kings of Leon, Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight and The Zutons but on the other, was Bon Jovi, The Verve and dare I say it, hints of Robbie Williams vocal quality, wrapped into a stunningly polished performance that had the crowd screaming for more at the end. And we got more…in the form of a 12-track album which could easily result in some chart topping material if the right commercial backing is found. Emma Dilemma and Why Johnny Why stand out as candidates for serious radio play but 4 or 5 more tracks including Clowns and Superstars and the ballad, Glorious Day also deserve serious recognition.

The Arusha Accord with Johnny Truant – Reading

Johnny Truant / The Arusha Accord at FACE BAR, READING- JULY 14TH

The Arusha Accord and Johnny Truant at Face Bar - Reading

Arusha Accord at Reading, Face Bar

This from the Arusha Accord- who play the FACE BAR, READING 14th JULY with Johnny Truant, Your Demise, Blackhole and When All Else Fails:

…. In the early part of 2005, we began work on a musical experiment ..

.. With no firm idea of direction, but with a mind to try and combine some of the chaotic variations of Sikth, the rage and speed of Dillinger, and the complex time signatures and textured progressive arrangements of Tool, we spent an intense and quite often frustrating two and a half year period creating and developing our sound ..

.. With the addition of a second vocalist in the summer of ’07, the missing element was found and a countdown to our first show could finally begin.

Since breaking onto the scene on November 11th of the same year, our feet haven’t really touched the ground .. The feedback has been fantastic, and after only three shows, we were excited to join forces with the awesome pioneering new label, Basick Records ..

.. After the recording of our E.P. at Outhouse Studios in January ‘08 (with a release date not expected until the early summer), we’ve now got a little time to write, think, practice and improve with an aim of becoming recognized as one of the most innovative writers and performers in this exciting new tech metal scene ..
