With The Meat Eating Orchids…

The Meat Eating Orchids are an English rock band notable for producing a musical hybrid of 60’s pop and a brash alternative rock sound. Formed by founding members Matt Gogarty (Vocals), Sam Pickett (Vocals, Guitar) and Stuart Boyde
(Bass).

“Meat Eating Orchids forgive no one just yet…”
The Band takes their name from a line of the song Heart-Shaped Box by Nirvana. A reminder of a less harmonious past between members. After a long and fruitless search for the right drummer, while writing songs, the band were joined last
minute by friend Christian Jeyes (Drums). After one practice the group went on to record their debut EP Meet The Meat Eating Orchids at Peak Studios with Producer Chris Hamilton in the English countryside…

Receiving an astounding reception among friends and family, the EP circulated wider and all but sold out the initial hundred copies of ‘Meet The Meat Eating Orchids’ EP.This led to a couple of invitations to appear on local radio stations
and an offer to play Surface Festival Unsigned 09. With this the band took their first tentative steps onto the live music scene…

Column

The first band to release a record on the legendary Factory Records, The Durutti Column have become the blue-print for post-punk, and a genuinely iconic musical institution.

In their 30 year’s career they have become one of the most treasured figure-heads of the British alternative scene, led by the charismatic musical virtuoso, Vini Reilly.  Their unique sound has been of influence to countless artists over the past few decades from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Brian Eno, Morrissey and even Gilbert and George.

It is a real honour to have a band of this stature perform at a local venue: The Firestation (just a few stops down the line to Windsor & Eaton Riverside from Staines) and certainly a highlight of their early spring programme.

‘Authentic’ Delta Blues –  in Shepperton

Delta Echoes at Shepperton

Delta Echoes
Feb 28 2009
Barley Mow
Shepperton

The Delta Echoes are a talented duo who re-create the country blues of the 1920s and 30s, played on Gibson acoustic and National steel guitars (most of them older than their players!), harmonica and kazoo.

They are: Richard Scruton, of Rich Pickings fame, well-known on the local folk and blues scene and an authentic interpreter of the guitar picking of the great Delta bluesmen, and Stuart Cumberpatch, who has been playing lap style and bottleneck blues on National guitars for most of the last 20 years – ten of them with the legendary Kennet Sheiks. The duo occasionally expands to a sextet with added double bass, mandolin, violin and jug!

Duncan Mckenzie & Alec McCabe at Staines

Duncan McKenzie at Staines

Nov 13 2008      9:00P The Staines Riverside Club £3

Those that regularly read this column and support live music in Staines will be familiar with Duncan McKenzie the smooth acoustic and blues operator who has recently been gracing our Thameside venue with his superlative fretwork and polished repertoire of soft, yet invigorating, blues. He has worked, recently, with Mike Piggott and, ofcourse, Big Jim Sullivan. He is now back in town with Alec McCabe.

If you like your blues to be soft, luxurious and professional- this show is not to be missed.  We are very luicky to have these guys in town!

Alec McCabe is a guitar teacher (originally from Australia) who also works as a duo (with  Lizzy Templer) sometimes adding musicians to the mix to create Freepeace a standalone rock band.

Audio.Video.Disco – EP Launch Party- Staines

Audio Video Disco at Staines

Nov 15 2008      8:00P  Audio. Video. Disco. EP Launch Party     Hob Staines

So it all started when Matt and Rich played lots of acoustic guitar for a long time and eventually they got a bit bored of the acoustic circuit and decided it was time for a change.

So in came the help of Adam Linton (bass) and Tom Smith (drums) into the band. Everything seemed to fall into place very quickly and new songs were written in a flash and we hit the ground running. All we needed was the band name….so after months of rubbish ideas and even worse ideas we settled on Audio.Video.Disco. meaning “I hear, I see, I learn” in latin and as rich described it, it was the coolest thing matt has ever come up with in his life!

They have played alongside established pop act Alphabeat, played headline shows at The Fighting Cocks, sold out in their hometown and had a storming set at The Clapham Grand, things are majorly looking up. The band are set to record with engineer / producer Phil English in September and are currently preparing for their biggest gig yet……a headline slot at the London Astoria 2. It’s gonna be mad, get a ticket, don’t be the only person to miss out……

Get Midi Midis at Staines

The MidiMidis at Staines

Oct 5 2008      8:00P MIDIMIDIS + MORE @ The Hobgoblin, Staines

Post punk / Electro / Thrash

‘Displaying an infectious enthusiasm for life, due to their independently motivated work ethic and energetic albeit shambolic lifestyles, MidiMidis loaded up with no memory card being removed. Spawning from an element of confusion and a longing for a bold incorporation of interesting and innovative influences, MidiMids represent a creative surge of creativity orchestrated by two brothers-in-law. Two brothers who enjoy spending far too much time drinking beer and experimenting with retro midi sounds on their old dusty unreliable laptops, GameBoys, GameGears and scuzzy broken guitars.

From an early age, the two have embraced everything from Gary Numan, AC/DC, Howard Jones and Bahuaus, to Nirvana, The Velvet Underground, and Television. MidiMidis create their minimalist fuzzy-buzzy 8-bit music by meticulously weaving the harsh feedback-heavy guitars of Sonic Youth together with the sharp angular work of Talking Heads, Kraftwerk and Human League.

Whether pondering over forgotten thoughts, the ubiquitous subject of relationship breakdowns or pining after a bottle of wine, lead singer Marcus manages to somehow circumvent the bile bitterness that many a songwriter would fall for. He treats these and other dark subjects with a bohemian carelessness and humorous irreverence only to the back drop of feedback laced angular guitars and electro bass and midi bleeps.

Play with Spectrum 7 – at Staines

Sepctrum 7

Spectrum 7 Oct 5 2008      8:00P Hobgoblin w/ The midi midi’s     Staines,

Its Rock Time!

In early 2006 two friends Sean Shreeve (Bass) and Jon Hardless (Guitar) began their early careers like most musicians; crafting songs in their bedrooms. Soon the ideals and conventions of a traditional rock band set-up were wearing thin with
the duo and they began to look for new and innovative ways to bring their vision of the way bands should sound to a future generation of listeners. Shreeve and Hardless immediately got to work crafting unconventional musical structures and
electronic beats on their Playstation while layering lyrics, guitar and bass riffs over the top. Although the band was still in a very premature form the duo managed to convince vocalist Jason Mirchandani to come onboard and after scrapping
their Playstation in favour of a laptop the group began hoaning their unique sound. Spectrum 7 were born!
